The most common form of Lupus is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Inflammation of connective tissue typically the joints coupled with a butterfly-shaped rash on the face across the nose, cheeks and forehead is typical symptoms of the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) up to nine times more common in women than men, typically affect those between twenty and forty years of age. As well as inflammation of the joints, the palms of the hands may become reddened, muscle aches, nausea, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weight loss, chest pain, bruising, mouth sores, hair loss, seizures, and extreme tiredness may set in and a fever might occur.

Deaths from lupus surged 44 percent in the United States from 1998 to 2001, and hospitalizations soared 128 percent.
This followed a 60 percent to 70 percent jump in deaths from 1979 to 1989 due to the autoimmune disease that has no cure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
And while scientists continue to make incremental strides against lupus, it remains one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose and one for which there have been no new treatment advances in more than 30 years. |

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a rheumatic disease characterized by aching and morning stiffness in the shoulder, hips, neck, and torso that rarely occurs in individuals under the age of 50. Symptoms usually affect both sides of the body equally, but asymmetrical pain or stiffness can occur. Some patients also complain of malaise, fatigue, appetite loss, weight loss, and fever. It is a relatively common disorder. Among Caucasians over age 50 about 7 out of 1000 people are affected.

While lupus erythematosus (LE) takes three forms — systemic LE (SLE), discoid LE, and drug-induced LE — I'm going to address only SLE because it's the most common. Unfortunately, though, no one knows what causes SLE. |
